Azealia Banks maybe pop music's newest "It" girl, but the young superstar had it rough growing up in New York. In her recent cover story for Dazed & Confused magazine, the '212' rapper opens up about her abusive childhood.
Banks revealed that she suffered physical and emotional abuse from her mother, which led her to leave home at the age of 14. “After my dad died, my mom became really abusive -- physically and verbally," she tells the magazine (quotes courtesy of the Examiner). "Like she would hit me and my sisters with baseball bats, bang our heads up against walls and she would always tell me I was ugly."
"I remember once she threw out all the food in the fridge, just so we wouldn't have anything to eat," she recalls. "It was like growing up a feral child, being raised by this person who was always yelling and screaming, hitting you and dragging you around and s---. Granted, she never had any drug or drinking problems -- her house was clean, her hair was always done, and we had stuff -- but she still f---ed me up real bad."
The Harlem native also dishes about her sexuality and being attracted to boys at a very young age. “Growing up I was so curious about boys. I just loved them," she said. "I'd always get my recesses taken away for letting boys touch my butt in the lunch line. I got in trouble for fooling around in school a lot. I just wanted to be touched, [you] know? I just wanted to have sex."
It's unclear if Banks stay connected with her father more since her mother was so abusive, but it's sad that she had to endure such a rough childhood. Hopefully she can inspire other young girls to speak out against domestic abuse with her story.
Azealia Banks' interview for Dazed & Confused, which has even been banned in several countries outside of the United States for its risqué cover, is on newsstands now. Check out a couple of photos from Banks' cover shoot below.
