Claire Rafson On Survivor 44
As per Claire’s interview with parade.com, she has been watching Survivor since she was 4 years old. So, it was a lifelong dream of hers to try out her survival skills in the ultimate area. Now, here she is at the age of 25.
Answering the question “What’s one life experience you feel has prepared you for the game?,” Claire said she has always been the odd one out growing up as a queer black Jewish woman. In her view, she’s been playing a social/strategic game of Survivor her whole life to fit in society. Furthermore, Claire revealed she values loyalty over everything in an alliance partner.
In the first episode of the show, viewers were first presented with the information that the three tribes of six are Ratu in orange, Soka in green, and Tika in purple before meeting the 18 castaways. Then, Jeff Probst, the producer of the show, told the contestants that he will “birth [them] into the game with the first reward challenge.”
In the challenge, teams had to crawl under obstacles in teams of two, and each player was tasked with carrying a puzzle piece back. Once the team had all six pieces, two players had to put together a puzzle. Then, three more players each needed to throw rings off of a very tall post.
A few minutes into the challenge, Bruce from the Tika tribe hit his head on the wooden post and bleed profusely. Jeff called in the medical team and the team advised Bruce to keep playing under supervision.
In the end, the Soka tribe finished in the first place, winning a pit, a machete, and a flint. Ratu followed them and earned the chance to pick between “Sweat” or “Savvy” and the Tika tribe came in last.
Back at the camp, Ratu had to choose between “Sweat” or “Savvy.” They chose “Sweat,” in which they had to drag a bag of coconuts back and forth as the production added more coconuts within four hours. The Ratu tribe finished the challenge just in the nick of time.
At the Tika tribe camp, they had to take on “Savvy.” The challenge was to figure out the number of rings in the two spheres. Carson and Helen solved the puzzle easily, and the tribe got back to work.
At night time, Bruce, who had hit his head earlier during the day, started to feel faint. Bruce was then pulled from the game, becoming the game’s first casualty.
For the first Immunity Challenge, teams had to push a boat out to sea, paddle around a buoy, and get a heavy chest from the water onto the shore. They, then, had to get the chest onto a zig-zag track, drag it down the track, untie the chest, and pull out a small bag with a key. Lastly, they had to complete a giant slide puzzle with VERY heavy pieces.
Soka, since they have one of the physically strongest teams, came in first place throughout the challenge. Tika came in second place with the shield whereas Ratu finished last and was forced to go to the tribal council.
Back to the Ratu camp, tensions arise as players hustle to stay in the game. Maddy wanted to vote out Brandon, and vice versa. Once they got to tribal, Jaime revealed that she was going to play her shot-in-the-dark for a one-in-six chance at safety. Sensing the chaos, Brandon decided to play his idol.
Maddy and Kan both voted out Brandon. But Brandon, with his idol, voted out Maddy, making her the first player voted out of Survivor 44.
