BARNETT Twp., JEFFERSON Co.--A day long standoff with police ended peacefully Sunday morning when the suspect surrendered.
Police said John Macbeth is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person.
Saturday around 8:30 a.m., police responded to an intoxicated man with a gun, holed up in his house.
Police said he refused to talk to police or come out.
Michael Macbeth is the lifelong friend and cousin of John Macbeth. Michael owns the family business, Macbeth's Cabins, started by his great grandfather in 1929. He said John lived in an upstairs apartment and was part of the business.
Macbeth's Cabins offers cabins, a store and gift shop, gas station, and grill for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
"He was involved and he helped out," Michael said. "He worked in the store sometimes and he worked around the cabins mowing and taking care of the roads."
Michael Macbeth said he's been assessing the damage from the standoff, cleaning up, and moving forward.
"Troopers were definitely in danger the entire time they were there," Bruce Morris, State Police Trooper, said.
According to the police affidavit, at 4:30 p.m. SERT deployed gas into the home. It also said between 4:30 and 5:09 p.m., John Macbeth started firing shots at SERT members. Police said he fired a total of 30 shots.
"He could have hit someone, even just randomly by shear accident from the number of rounds fired," Morris said.
Police shut down SR 36 in the Village of Cooksburg and shut down the power in that area to isolate the defendant.
"Overtime the lack of utilities and stress of the situation will eventually wear the individual down," Morris said. "It worked like it was suppose to, he gave up. That's the ultimate goal; he leaves there uninjured and our guys leave there uninjured."
Michael Macbeth said because it's preseason, no one was inside the cabins or the store at the time of the standoff. The backside of the store suffered a lot of damage that he said he'll be working on this week.
"It's sad that a close family member and close friend of mine made it come to this," Michael Macbeth, said. "I'm just thankful no one was injured in the end. Things are things they can be fixed, we can take care of that."
Michael and some other family members stayed at the command post at the DCNR Building during the standoff for safety. It ended Sunday morning around 10:20 a.m. Police said John Macbeth came outside the home and surrendered peacefully.
Michael said Macbeth's Cabins plans to be open again by Easter. He said he doesn't know why his cousin did what he did but he's thankful everyone is safe.
John Macbeth is in the Jefferson County Jail on $500,000 dollars bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 5.
