BIOGRAPHY
The actress and director, Elpidia Carrillo, was born on August 16, 1961 in the mountain community of Santa Elena, in the municipality of Parácuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. She was one of eight siblings in a family dedicated to agriculture. Her childhood was marked by violence and poverty; at the age of three her father was murdered, forcing her older brother, Ramiro Carrillo, to assume the responsibility of raising the family. They moved to Parácuaro so that the children could study, when Elpidia was 6 years old, Ramiro was shot to death outside a theater. This fact and the economic crisis that her family faces causes Elpidia to leave school and move with one of her older sisters to Uruapan, where she began working as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant. In 1977 she debuted as an actress in the film Deseos and the following year she participated in the big screen adaptation of Pedro Páramo and Nuevo Mundo. She is known for her participation in films such as Predator (1987), Bread and Roses (2000) and Nine Lives (2005). She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Performance thanks to her performance in Salvador (1986), directed by Oliver Stone. Her most recent projects include The Green Ghost (2018), Chateau Vato (2018) and The Tax Collector (2019).
