WASHINGTON (TND) — Amid concerns about President Biden’s viability for a second term, Hillary Clinton says she won't run for president again.
The former secretary of state and Democrat Party presidential nominee was asked by CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell during a Tuesday interview if she'd ever run for president again.
No, no, but I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that we have a president who respects our democracy and the rule of law and upholds our institutions," Clinton answered.Clinton notably lost a bid to be her party's presidential nominee in 2008 to former President Barack Obama and, perhaps more famously, lost the 2016 presidential election to former President Donald Trump.
If Trump decides to run again in 2024, Clinton hopes Republicans "grow a backbone" and nominate someone else.
It should start in the Republican Party. Grow a backbone. Stand up to this guy." Clinton said, "And heaven forbid if he gets the nomination, he needs to be defeated roundly and sent back to Mar-a-Lago."Clinton said in the interview that she would endorse President Joe Biden in 2024 if he runs, claiming that he is "most likely to win" if he chooses to run for reelection.
However, a July poll from The New York Times and Siena College showed that most Democrat Party voters don't want Biden to run again. According to that poll, 64% of respondents who claimed they leaned Democrat said they wanted someone else to be the presidential nominee in 2024. The top reason given was Biden's age.
A CNN poll taken in July showed similar results, with 75% of respondents who claimed to lean Democrat saying they wanted someone other than Biden to run in 2024. The desire for new nominees crosses the aisle, with 55% of respondents who claimed to be Republican-leaning saying they wanted someone other than Trump as their 2024 presidential nominee.
Clinton also took an opportunity during the CBS Evening News interview to accuse Trump of leading a "seditious conspiracy" against America, criticism stemming from the events leading up to, during and after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. The former secretary of state also criticized comparisons between her own private email server scandal and Trump's current woes after an FBI raid at his Mar-A-Lago resort led to the discovery of classified materials.
I think it’s a really different comparison to what’s going on here," Clinton said. "It appears that the Justice Department and the FBI have been incredibly patient, quiet, careful until they finally apparently thought that national security was at stake."Earlier on Tuesday, Clinton tweeted out that while Trump is being investigated, "the right is trying to make this about me" by bringing up her email server scandal again.
I can’t believe we’re still talking about this, but my emails As Trump’s problems continue to mount, the right is trying to make this about me again. There’s even a ‘Clinton Standard.’ The fact is that I had zero emails that were classified," Clinton wrote in her tweet.[Former FBI Director James] Comey admitted he was wrong after he claimed I had classified emails. Trump’s own State Department, under two different Secretaries, found I had no classified emails," Clinton continued in her tweet thread. That's right: ZERO. By contrast, Trump has hundreds of documents clearly marked classified, and the investigation just started," Clinton added. "I’m more tired of talking about this than anyone, but here we are."Clinton added at the bottom of her tweet thread that if anyone was "interested in the facts," they could read the article she linked, titled "How Many Of 'Her Emails' Were Classified? Actually, Zero."
