Authorities with the Cambria County Humane Society have filed charges against a Johnstown area man following an investigation into alleged animal abuse and neglect.

Officials say the investigation into 67-year-old Daniel Gates began in late November after authorities received a complaint from the landlord of a property, located along Dorothy Avenue.

Investigators say Gates was accused of abandoning and neglecting multiple dogs at the property, and the dogs were eventually removed.

Upon further investigation, authorities learned that Gates also owned a property, which was also located along Dorothy Avenue, and police say they had reason to believe that there may be other animals at that residence as well.

Police say on Dec. 2, officers searched the secondary residence where they discovered the home in deplorable conditions.

Officials say the home was "uninhabitable" and smelled of urine and feces.

Police say a total of 15 cats were found inside the residence, 10 of which were dead, and the other five had no access to food or water.

Investigators say they received no response from Gates prior to visiting either of the homes and the animals were deemed abandoned.

According to online court records, Gates faces 10 counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals, misdemeanor cruelty to animals and animal neglect.

He has not yet been arraigned.
