First responders from the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and nearby agencies were called around 10:45 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5 to a working basement fire with mayday in the 36300 block of Notley Woods Lane.

Upon arrival, crews reported that there was smoke coming from the roof of the residence after rapidly spreading from the basement to the rest of the residence.

Firefighters were able to quickly enter the home and battled the fire, which was declared under control at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, though not before a mayday was called when a crew member was temporarily in a perilous position.

A second alarm was sounded halfway through the firefight, and the mayday was cleared once everyone was evacuated from the home.

Two firefighters were evaluated by paramedics and taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation on Monday afternoon.
