563K Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes vehicles affected

Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted a barrage of new recalls related to Takata's fatally flawed airbags. Over the weekend, the agency did so again, affecting cars and SUVs from luxury marques produced by Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz.

As with many Takata recalls, the new ones are being conducted by region. This is because the ammonium nitrate causing Takata airbags to explode upon deployment is most prone to destabilize in hot, humid weather. That's why cars registered or sold in the Gulf Coast region are being repaired more quickly than those registered in, say, the Rocky Mountains. Here's how NHTSA categorizes American states and territories:

Zone A includes Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Zone B includes Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Zone C includes Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming

We'd remind you that, even if your car isn't currently registered in an affected zone, it might've been previously. If so, it's subject to one of these recalls.

We'd also point out that today's recalls are meant to replace passenger-side airbag inflators. Many of the vehicles listed below have already been affected by separate recalls to replace driver-side devices. If you own one of these models, we encourage you to contact the automaker or NHTSA for additional details.
