Nick Gehlfuss Movies and TV Shows: What He Was in Before Chicago Med
He may be known as Dr. Will Halstead to One Chicago fans, but Nick Gehlfuss’ movies and TV shows prove that he’s more than just Gaffney’s risk-taking surgeon.
Gehlfuss has starred in more than 20 TV shows and movies, according to his IMDb. Along with Chicago Med, Gehlfuss’ credits also include other One Chicago shows, such as Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., as well as primetime series like Shameless, Constantine, The Newsroom and Person of Interest. In an interview with Huffington Post in 2016, Gehlfuss opened up about the roles he’d like to play next. “You know, I would be honored to play any of the other roles that are portrayed in the Chicago franchise that are really the unsung heroes of our society,” he said. “These are people who truly devote their lives to other people and I think there’s something truly commendable about that. Like police officers — especially undercover cops. Any time you can play something where you are playing two roles in one- that’s always very attractive. What I love about Will Halstead is that I am playing someone that I am truly inspired by.”
He continued, “As for people I would love to work with, Meryl Streep, of course! She’s my favorite. Hopefully she can come on guest star on Chicago Med! [Laughs] She’s top notch and can do it all. I admire George Clooney very much as well. I really love how he’s managed to build such a successful and balanced career.”
After eight seasons, Gehlfuss left Chicago Med in the Season 8 finale. In a statement to Variety in May 2023, Gehfluss thanked One Chicago fans for watching him and Will for almost a decade. “It’s no secret, without you, we would not have jobs,” he said. “One of the most important things we can give to one another as our time. So thank you all for your time and your support. I have been so flattered by the amount of people that have come up to me to say something positive about One Chicago and my work. That is the best confirmation of the contract between audience and storyteller. While Will Halstead is leaving, One Chicago is not. Enjoy the seasons to come!”
If you’re missing Will, you may be wondering what else Gehlfuss has been in. Read on for Will Gehlfuss’ movies and TV shows to watch now that he’s no longer on Chicago Med.
Chicago Med (2015 – 2023)
By far, Nick Gehlfuss best known role is as Dr. Will Halstead on NBC’s Chicago Med, one of three shows in the One Chicago franchise, which also includes Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.. He starred as Will — a surgeon at the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center — on Chicago Med from Seasons 1 to 8. He left in the Season 8 finale in May 2023, which saw Will resign from Gaffney and move from Chicago to Seattle to reunite with his ex-fiance, Natalie Manning. Along with 163 episodes of Chicago Med, Gehlfuss also starred as Will in in 21 episodes of Chicago Fire and 18 episodes of Chicago P.D.
“We are a success story, and I’ll never forget this time in my life or the people I worked with. I was really lucky to start out with such a wonderful group of people,” he told TV Line at the time of his exit from Chicago Fire. “This show changed my life for the better. I remember getting the phone call in November 2014, and I was literally making a dining room table, and I would deliver them throughout Los Angeles, and after that phone call, I said yes and had no idea that I would do 163 episodes of Chicago Med.”
He continued, “Eight years, that’s two college degrees. Maybe that means I have a doctorate in television now, actually. I learned so much, I grew so much, and I’ll never forget how powerful of an experience it was to grow within a group and with the group. My favorite part of acting is how it makes me a better person. Everything I learned as an actor can directly be applied to my personal life. And it’s not just the craft, but the people you experience that craft with.”
Constantine (2015)
Months before his debut as Dr. Will Halstead on Chicago Med, Nick Gehlfuss was also a doctor on NBC’s Constantine, a detective drama based on the DC Comics character of the same name. He played Dr. Thomas Galen, a doctor attacked by a mystical entity, in Season 1, Episode 12, “Angels and the Ministers of Grace.”
Shameless (2014)
Nick Gehlfuss starred in six episodes in Season 4 of Showtime’s Shameless in 2014. He played Robbie Pratt, the brother of main character Fiona Gallagher’s boyfriend Mike, whom she has an affair with. In an interview with Huffington Post in 2016, Gehlfuss revealed that Shameless was the first time he experienced Chicago before starring in Chicago Med.
“For Shameless, most of the exterior work is done in Chicago, but most of the interior work is done in Los Angeles. That was the first time I ever got to experience Chicago,” he said. “And that character [can’t help but laugh] it’s amazing because he is the farthest person from who I am. But, as an actor, I salivate over playing characters like that because you get to stretch yourself.”
He continued, “There are no consequences, and you get to have a lot of fun in a world where the exact title really represents what the show is — Shameless. That was my first real experience with a recurring character on the level where I felt; ‘Yes. This is it. This is how I want to be working. I’m cooking now, and this is where I want to be.’ I set a goal for myself in being an actor and moving out to L.A., and I really felt I had achieved it when I landed Shameless. That role really ignited the spark into what was my being a part of Chicago Med. It put me on a whole different level. And I love working on the city street — especially Chicago. When you’re working outdoors in any capacity, and you have nature to partner with, all of this magic can happen — and it’s certainly present in the city of Chicago.”
The Newsroom (2013)
Nick Gehlfuss starred in four episodes in Season 2 of HBO’s The Newsroom. He played Ross Kessler, an associate at the law firm Lowell-Tiller, who represented Atlantis World Media in a multi-million dollar wrongful termination lawsuit brought against them by producer Jerry Dantana.
