Jeannette, Pennsylvania (WPXI) — Authorities say an intense house fire claimed five lives from the same family early Wednesday morning in western Pennsylvania.
Officials in the city of Jeannette say a 27-year-old father and four of his children were killed as the fire consumed their home.
According to the Westmoreland County coroner, their ages ranged from one-month to seven-years old.
Fire officials say a woman and two other children were rescued from the house before the flames spread.
The large fire spread to the house next door and both homes are considered a total loss.
Jeannette fire chief Billy Frye also reported that the first hydrant they tried did not work properly, forcing firefighters to use tank water to fight the flames.
At one point fire fighters were called to pull out of the home due for their safety.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
