STATE COLLEGE -- The Interfraternity Council at Penn State has confirmed that it has suspended all social events for all 46 Greek Life chapters until further notice.
"The Interfraternity Council, in cooperation with the University and support from all 46 chapters involved, has decided that all social events for all 46 chapters will be suspended until further notice," Penn State IFC Vice President for Communication Michael Cavallaro said in a statement to 6 News.
"We have placed Beta Theta Pi on a Cease and Desist order until the ongoing investigation is concluded. The IFC Executive Board and the chapter presidents will work closely with the University during this suspension period.
"This time will be spent restructuring current risk management policies and implementing significant changes to our conduct policies to make life in our Greek organizations, University, and community as safe as possible."
Cavallaro noted that only Beta Theta Pi will not be allowed to participate in THON, but all other chapters will be permitted. He defined a social event as an occasion where alcohol is present.
The university also released a statement Wednesday night.
The decision comes less than a week after Timothy Piazza with Beta Theta Pi, died after falling down stairs at a fraternity house.
Tuesday, Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick ruled the death accidental and said Piazza died of multiple traumatic injuries from the fall.
State College police said fraternity members told them Piazza was under the influence of alcohol during the time of the fall. An investigation is ongoing.
The IFC said a candle light vigil will take place Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Main steps. Piazza's family will be in attendance and several guest speakers are expected.
