HARRISBURG, Pa. (TND) — An upcoming bill in the Pennsylvania Senate would ban migrants from being eligible for state public housing.
Migrants entering the state have become eligible for an emergency housing program, which allows them to obtain a housing voucher, State Sen. Wayne Langerholc, R- District 35, said. The senator called out President Joe Biden in a memo on the bill Wednesday, blaming him for that state’s migrant problems.
Pennsylvanians should not continue to bear the costs of President Biden's disastrous border policies,” he wrote. “This waiver has granted housing authorities across the nation significant latitude regarding immigration status, a troubling development for communities with housing authorities suffering from poor leadership focused solely on accessing additional federal funds.”The senator also called out leaders in the federal Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD). Former Secretary Marcia Fudge in January testified before the House Committee on Financial Services, saying the department placed no restrictions on how housing funds can be used for migrants.
“Former HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge testified earlier this year before the House Financial Services Committee, stating that HUD places no restrictions on local housing authorities using funds to house illegal migrants, which is troubling and, for some programs, directly violates federal regulations,” Sen. Langerholc wrote. “HUD also lacks information regarding the number of illegal migrants currently housed in federally assisted housing.”
“My legislation will ensure that our communities are safe from the continued mismanagement of HUD by prohibiting housing authorities in this Commonwealth from providing housing assistance to illegal migrants,” he continued.
