Protesters at University of Washington campus vandalize news crew's camera

A group of more than 200 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered on the University of Washington campus Tuesday night, with demonstrators twice using spray paint to vandalize the lens of a KOMO News camera.

Additionally, a KOMO News crew witnessed at least one fight during the demonstration, with at least 10 people involved in the skirmish. No arrests were reported and nobody appeared to be seriously hurt.

Throughout the protest, demonstrators held up black umbrellas as a means to block off access to the Quad on UW's campus. Moreover, several of the participants used plastic trash cans as a means to create a barrier between themselves and onlookers.

Tuesday's protest followed UW's announcement that it would not cut ties to Boeing or Israel despite the protesters' call to do so.

On Monday, dozens of tents had spread across the grassy area, popularized every spring by the cherry blossoms. But for the past week, people who identify with the "liberation zone" have popped up tents and signs calling for UW to end its connection to Israel and Boeing.

Boeing has been building weapons that are used by Israel in committing genocide against Palestinians,” one protester said. “UW funneling students towards this company has meant that many students who go to this school are put into jobs that are complacent in genocide.

The tents, which started sprouting up on April 29, had more of a permanent feel to them, some fresh from an REI rack and with Costco-sized bundles of food and water. Multiple people told reporters to check in for clearance to shoot in the public space, and one man aggressively told a KOMO News crew that no one could shoot video of the protestors in the zone, in the public crossing, without permission.

On Tuesday, conservative commentator Charlie Kirk appeared at UW just a few hundred yards away from a growing encampment at the Quad.

Kirk encouraged people to debate him about vaccines and foreign policy, and a couple hundred people stood around to watch the spectacle.

Later on in the evening, Kirk spoke to hundreds of people inside UW's student union. Despite calls for Kirk's appearance to be canceled, everything remained peaceful during his speech.
