Gunman killed by US Marshal during pursuit near WVU

UPDATE:

Morgantown police say one person is dead following an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and an armed gunman near the West Virginia University Campus Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded to the area of College Avenue and Falling Run just after 12 p.m. for reports of shots fired. Police. along with the U.S. Marshals Service, attempted to locate and arrest the gunman, who was a wanted fugitive.

According to police, the suspect attempted to run from authorities and fired at least one shot from a handgun at marshals. An officer returned fire, and the gunman was found dead at the scene.

West Virginia University police, Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State police also responded to the scene.

Police are waiting to release the gunman's name until the next of kin have been notified.

Police have not released any other details about the gunman or if there were any other victims.

The investigation is ongoing, and future updates will be provided through the U.S. Marshals Service.

The all clear was given just after 1:30 p.m.

Authorities are responding to calls of shots fired near the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown.

Police say the incident happened around noon Wednesday.

WVU police are telling people to avoid the are of College Avenue and Falling Run while authorities investigate.

Right now, police have not said if anyone was hurt in the incident or if a suspect is in custody.
