UW Palestine protest encampment prepares for counter-protest after Biden visit

A pro-Israeli rally and march is expected Sunday while those in the middle of the quad at the University of Washington continue their protest against the War in Gaza and the university’s ties to Boeing and Israel.

The Seattle-based movement has been agitating this weekend after President Joe Biden's Friday visit to the city for a fundraising and campaign event, which was met with protesters downtown.

Him being here is very agitating knowing that he now is pausing weapons supplies, but it’s too little too late,” one UW student in the camp who did not share their name said. “There’s so much that he is directly responsible for in terms of enabling this genocide to have lasted 7 months.

Those grouped in solidarity in the encampment will also have to respond to a planned pro-Israel protest and march scheduled for Sunday.

Fliers circulating online show a map, putting the path of the march right through the quad. It is to be seen how large the march will become, but those in the camp are preparing for what may happen.

Zho Ragen, a recently graduated UW student who has been at the camp since its inception, expressed concerns over the potential for clashes between the two groups.

I certainly do have concerns about that. I would love for there to not be violence," Ragen told KOMO.

Despite the camp being allowed to remain on campus, university officials have also expressed worry about its continued presence after the end of the academic year.

"Every day the encampment remains, the security concerns escalate and become more serious – for our UW community and for the people in the encampment itself," officials said in a statement. "The University is aware of a counter-protest being organized this Sunday that gives us significant concern because of the likelihood for confrontations. We have repeatedly conveyed our concerns about these risks to encampment organizers and to those who organize counter-protests.”

We call on members to dismantle the encampment voluntarily for everyone’s safety and continue constructive engagement for collective action," the statement continued.

Amidst the risks, it does not appear those at the quad are ready to leave anytime soon as they do not believe their goals have been met.

“We are going to stay here until the university meets our demands to divest academically and materially from Israel. To cut all ties with Boeing and to end the repression of the pro-Palestinian students, workers and faculty here on campus," Ragen said.

The Pro-Palestinian camp has been at the quad since late April. The number of tents has only grown since then and the demonstration has become larger.

Even with the threat of a large counter-protest, and the words of concern from the university, for now, their intent is to stay on campus as long as necessary.
